Voices of Coal
Immersive VR experience currently in development

Voices of Coal is a hybrid XR project by Time Network artist Debbie Harman, exploring post-coal futures while honoring the mining past. Using sound extracted from Kellingley Coal via the Geomechanics Lab at Geosolutions Leeds, the immersive experience blends projection, VR filmmaking, and experimental sound design to deepen our sensory relationship with land and memory.
Inspired by her earlier project Power, Debbie describes the work as an “emotional geo-narrative,” excavating voices from mining sites around Wakefield. The project has been supported by Sheffield DocFest AR Talent 2024, XR Stories, Live Cinema UK, CULTVR, Mediale, and Alexander Whitley Dance Company, with research support from Dr Stefan Skirmish.
Exhibition: National Coal Mining Museum, Winter 2025.

For this project, I contributed virtual art, environment creation, extensive particle system work, motion capture integration, and 360° mono cinematics and rendering. I was also involved in creative collaboration, shaping the flow and tone of the immersive journey.
